Randburg is an area in north western Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province in South Africa. Randburg received it's name from a competition. It originated from the South African Rand currency, which was brought in at the same time when the new municipality was established in 1959.
The area is young, fast-growing developing urban and commercial centre. One of the first shopping mall centres was the Sanlam Pedestrain in Randburg. Randburg is home to the head offices of Multichoice and its associated companies - M-Net and Supersport.
Randburg well known for its numerous shopping malls and shopping centres with the Cresta Centre and Northgate being the most well-known. The Brightwater Commons is an excellent shopping complex which contains a flea market, restaurants, a bowling alley, skateboarding park and a cinema surrounding a lake. This is a new concept of urban shopping, with everything under the same roof. Soft landscaping, decorated walkways with a village green creates a new dimension to the shopping experience.
