Why you want these colours in your boutique hotel

Boutique hotels are attractive because of the detail in design that goes into the small hotel. With feature furniture pieces making a statement and bringing in a sense of intimacy in every room, they promise an amazing stay and guest experience. If you have the setting of a city such as Cape Town to surround your hotel, there is definitely more than enough inspiration for décor and design.

But there’s a science of psychology behind certain colours and your mood. And if you want to make the most of your guests’ experience with your service, you’re going to want these colours in your boutique hotel.


Natural colours

Natural colours and natural materials are a great way to destress and replace the energy that being out in the city drained us of. And isn’t that what your guests are looking for? A place to start and end the day in a peaceful environment that makes them feel healthy and happy? When we talk about natural colours, we are talking about warm-toned creams, browns, green and even greys. Any colour that accurately represents nature. Nature means balance, peace and harmony to most and nature as a colour and texture palette, will do the same.

The best way to bring in natural colours without only using paint on the walls, is to literally bring nature inside. Use wooden materials, have plants in the rooms, woven baskets or stone textiles. There are many ways to decorate with natural tones and it’s everything your guests need to reconnect with “nature” from the comfort of their duck-feather duvets. Or welcome them with a natural-colour-themed lobby to relax them as soon as they walk through the doors.

Bright yellow is a bit much for the eyes and will just tire or stress out your guests. Breakfast areas with yellow and even complimentary green colour features will certainly start the day on the right note.
  • Blue: When you see blue, you instinctively associate with the ocean or the sky. And the ocean and sky are associated with calmness. Blue is a great bedroom colour because it induces better quality sleep, lowers blood pressure and heart rate. The needed combination for a good night’s rest. Be careful of using dark blues, which are associated with depression.
  • Red: This color has the opposite effect than blue by increasing blood pressure and heart rates. And besides it being a warm colour where blue is cool, it stirs up feelings of energy, passion and a brewing appetite. Bringing in red to your boutique dining area will most certainly get the tummies grumbling and the conversation going.

With any of these colours, it’s important not to overuse them in a given room. The intensity may not always have the desired effect on your guests’ moods. So use whichever colours you wish, but don’t forget to offset it with another, preferably natural, colour through décor and furniture.
